“When you are painting you should take a flat mirror and often look at your work within it, and it will then be seen in reverse, and will appear to be by the hand of some other master, and you will be better able to judge of it’s faults than in any other way.”

— Leonardo da Vinci
(1452 – 1519)

Ruskin spoke not of teaching to draw but teaching to see.

“Every good artist paints what he is”

— Jackson Pollock
(1912 – 1956)

In response to the question “How do you know when you have finished?” Pollock replied, “How do you know when you’re finished making love?”

“A painting requires a little mystery, some vagueness, some fantasy. When you always make your meaning perfectly plain you end up boring people.”

“I’m glad I haven’t found my style yet. I’d be bored to death”
— Edgar Degas
